Sweet Potato and Pea Curry (Vegan + Gluten Free)

This is it - THIS is the ultimate dreary day comfort food. The warming spices of curry complement sweet, creamy coconut milk and savory vegetable broth to form the base for this curry, while sweet potatoes and peas lend texture, flavor, and nutrition. A sprinkling of peanuts and sesame seeds adds delightful crunch that ties this curry together.


I try not to talk too much about my dating life in this little blog here, mostly because the link is literally in my Tinder bio and I don't want to scare boys off by talking about them before I even meet them, but fuck it my love life is screwed anyway why not share it with the world?!


Since August 2016, I have lived in a gorgeous rowhouse in Columbia Heights with 4 lovely girls who are all very nice. It was a great situation - except that they were all majorly wifed up. A 3-year relationship, two 1.5ish year relationships, and one on-and-off-but-always-with-the-same-guy meant I was alone a hell of a lot. And guys, I know it's cuffing season and all, but this ISN'T NORMAL. We're all 23! We're young! It's time to explore places and people and learn about ourselves and get hurt and cry and then learn from it! Am I wrong?!?!

After my last relationship ended in December, I went on a series of increasingly horrible dates with guys who either had no personality, no chemistry, or horribly large fish lips (please don't ask). While the stories were fun to share with my friends, it took an emotional toll that - combined with my lovey-dovey housemates - had me suuuuper down.


So, I deleted my dating apps.* (And found a super sick new house in Dupont where I can live with both guys and girls and make all my Jess-from-New-Girl dreams come true)

People who know me were like "WOAH JESS YOU DID WHAAAAAAT?!"

I was like "yeaaaaaah, bitches, I'm a strong independent thot who don't need no man."


But, let's be real - every girl needs something to cuddle at night. SO, I made the most snuggly, hygge, hug-in-a-bowl curry you could possibly dream of, and I'm sharing it with you today! Get excited!

Sweet Potato and Pea Curry


To make this curry, you will need:
- 1 T curry powder
- 1 t salt
- 1/2 t pepper
- 1/2 cumin
- 1/4 turmeric
- 1/2 t ginger
- 1 medium sweet onion, diced
- 12 oz peas, either fresh or heated from frozen
- 2 medium sweet potatoes, cubed
- 1 cup vegetable broth (STILL OBSESSED with this powder from Giant!)
- 14 oz light coconut milk
- Peanuts, cilantro, sesame seeds, etc for garnish


To start out, heat a large pot on the stove over medium. Add your spices and let toast for about 30 seconds, stirring constantly. Add your onion and half of the vegetable broth and let cook for 5 minutes, stirring occasionally.

Once the onion pieces are translucent, add the cubed sweet potato, coconut milk, and remaining vegetable broth. Bring to a boil, reduce to a fast simmer, and cover your pot. Let simmer for 15-20 minutes (until the sweet potatoes are fork-tender), stirring every 5 minutes. Add the peas in with 5 minutes of cook time remaining.


That's it! That's literally it! I told you it was easy! Serve it up over some brown rice (or basmati... or white... or quinoa! Quinoa is always good), garnish however you please, and relish in the cozy warmth of your homemade curry. Better than a boyfriend. Now, if only I can get it to buy me drinks...
